WTA / ATP Beijing Semi-Final Predictions: Kvitova-Jankovic and Berdych-Nadal

1. Petra Kvitova v Jelena Jankovic
Petra Kvitova
Another three setter and another victory for Petra Kvitova, who has now won her last 8 matches and her last 9 three set matches.  Kvitova beat Li Na for the best win of them all as she recovered from losing the first set and fought off a rampant crowd to post a 4-6 6-2 6-4 victory to level their head-to-head at 3-3.  Petra now takes on Jelena Jankovic, who edged past Lucie Safarova in an epic three set match, 6-7(3) 6-4 6-4 that lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Kvitova leads the head-to-head by 2 wins to 0, which includes a 3 set win in Linz in 2011 and a straight sets win in the Fed Cup final last year.  Jankovic still has a lot to play for with a place at the YEC still in her sights, meanwhile Kvitova has all but confirmed her place following her run in Tokyo and this week's semi-final showing.  I thought Kvitova would run out of steam this week, but apparently not and with a potential final against Serena Williams on the card, I do hope Petra pulls through.

Prediction - Kvitova to beat Jankovic in 3 sets

2. Tomas Berdych v Rafael Nadal
The pristine 2013 hard court record was under serious threat today as Rafael Nadal recovered from a 6-2 4-1 deficit to win 11 of the next 12 games to beat Fabio Fognini, 2-6 6-4 6-1.  Fognini was superb for a set and a half, but unsurprisingly against Nadal's never say die attitude and based on some of his atrocious recent performances, he folded like a cheap tent.  Tomas Berdych overcame John Isner in a promising scoreline, 7-5 6-2 to set up this semi-final with Rafa.  Berdych's recent record against Nadal has been awful with 14 straight losses; it is not like he hasn't ran him close a few times, but he always mentally checks out when things get close.  Nadal for the win and back to world number one...

Prediction - Nadal to beat Berdych in 2 tight sets

  1. Dodig was a ripe old berry deep in the thicket of the draw, Bravo for picking him out:-)
Ofcourse I'm saying this today because its possible he loses tomorrow although I'd like to see him win-yeah!!

  2. Wellington said of Napoleon that his mere presence on the battlefield increased the strength of the army by 30,000 men. If I were under Raonic's command I'd be among the first 100 to leave. The guy just has no charisma. If he served first I might stick around for some minutes until he served his first 'non-ace'. He's been able to muster his secret little army of minions to this campaign. We'll see! Dodig is a true cavalier-Hector of his land. It will be a valiant duel.

  3. As a side note I think Raonic would look very good dressed up as an artillery officer. 19th century artillery officer with all the those wonderful colors and pomp. Not the boring camouflage of 20th century fog. I'll be sure to reccommend him to Marshal Federer. Pete must be kept out of this no matter what.

  4. I'm looking at the map of Italy now and I am truly going mad...why do I keep seeing your pic of Petra Kvitotva over Rome holding a torch? Because she's wearing purple?
