Murray wins Brisbane, Kvitova crashes in Sydney

Andy Murray
Week one was still in the process of finishing as the second week of tennis action got underway in Sydney and Hobart last night.  Andy Murray kicked off 2013 with a solid victory in the Brisbane final over Grigor Dimitrov, 7-6 6-4.  The Bulgarian had his chances, but Murray raised his game at the crucial stages of the match.  Janko Tipsarevic claimed the title in Chennai as he defeated the surprise finalist, Roberto Bautista-Agut, who had taken Tomas Berdych out in the quarter-finals.

Now onto action for the upcoming week and we saw my tip for the title in Sydney, Petra Kvitova crash out to Dominika Cibulkova in rather spectacular fashion, 6-1 6-1.  It was a really disappointing performance and she could barely keep a ball in court; I am not sure if it was the heat or just a bad day at the office? Anyway, she will go into Melbourne with relatively little match practice and few predicting she can go all the way.  In other matches, Caroline Wozniacki won her first match of 2013 with a comfortable straight sets win over Urzsula Radwanska, meanwhile over in Hobart, Sloane Stephens edged a battle of the hot prospects with Laura Robson to progress to the second round.

Also of note today, Ross Hutchins announced the sad news today on Twitter that he has been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, the same disease that sidelined Alisa Kleybanova in 2011.  I wish him a very speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon :-)

  1. Hi Moo. Gutted for Kvitova. She needs a good string of results soon or else she'll drop down the rankings fast.

  2. Hi, random cloud.

Yes me too! I would say she is probably my favourite WTA player at the moment so was both disappointed for her and my prediction too. I hope she can at least get a few wins at the AO as she is defending a lot of points.
