ATP World Tour Finals: Day 2 Predictions

Roger Federer
1. Roger Federer v Janko Tipsarevic
Roger Federer begins his title defence against the Janko Tipsarevic, who sneaked into the top eight by virtue of Rafael Nadal's dodgy knees.  Federer did not play Paris, which was a smart move following a run to the final in Basle.  Tipsarevic made the quarter-finals of Paris where he retired hurt at 6-3 1-6 4-1 down to Jerzy Janowicz.  His form since reaching the US Open quarter-finals has been woeful at best and his hopes of even picking up a win look to be pretty slim.  His first match is definitely his toughest as he is yet to record a win over Federer in five tries.  I do not expect things to change here with Federer getting off the board with a comfortable win.

Prediction - Federer to beat Tipsarevic in 2 sets

2. David Ferrer v Juan Martin Del Potro
The night session should see an interesting affair between two players with different game styles, David Ferrer and Juan Martin Del Potro.  Ferrer has just won his first Masters title in Paris and the overriding question will be how much did last week take out of him?  Del Potro exited in the 3rd round to Michael Llodra, but this was no surprise having played the two weeks before that and bagging two titles too in Vienna and Basel.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ferrer leads the head-to-head by 5 wins to 2.  Del Potro has always struggled to hit through the dogged Ferrer and both times this year, he has fallen in straight sets.  In fact a 6-3 6-2 6-3 defeat to Ferrer at Wimbledon was actually a rout and one of Del Potro's weakest displays of 2012 as he ran out of ideas completely.  I fancy Del Potro to have more answers this time, but I still believe Ferrer to be on a high and that he will pull out the win.  I think it will be later in the week when he starts to tire...

Prediction - Ferrer to beat Del Potro in 3 sets
