US Open Mens Final: Preview and Predictions

Andy Murray
Andy Murray progressed to his second US Open final with a 5-7 6-2 6-1 7-6 victory over Tomas Berdych in horrendous conditions on Saturday.  After losing the opening set, Murray looked to be strolling into the final as he had two break points to lead 4-0 in the fourth set; however Berdych staged a surprising fightback and he even held a set point in the final tiebreak before Murray dug deep to make his second consecutive Grand Slam final.

Murray's opponent in the final will be Novak Djokovic, who defeated David Ferrer, 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-2.  The match began yesterday with Djokovic in disarray in the torrential gusts as Ferrer raced into a 5-2 lead.  The match was postponed in rather bizarre fashion with a full-scale evacuation of Arthur Ashe due to the impending weather conditions.  When they came back, the match was all Djokovic as he tore through Ferrer to make another US Open final.

The head-to-head is quite even with Djokovic leading by 8 wins to 6 and both players beating each other twice this year.  Djokovic won their last match on the hard courts of Miami and also won that terrific tussle in the Australian Open semi-finals, which remains as my favourite mens match of the year so far.  Murray however won their last match at the Olympics in a tight two setter.  Djokovic has been playing extremely well but after the Olympics I have just had the feeling that this is Murray's time to claim his first Grand Slam title... come on Murrrrrray!!!

Prediction - Murray to beat Djokovic in 5 sets

You can view my original predictions for the mens draw, which have been pretty good! If Murray wins, it will have been a very successful week :-)
