WTA New Haven Update - Petkovic returns, beats Babos in opener

Andrea Petkovic made a triumphant return to the WTA tour with a gritty three set victory over Timea Babos, 6-3 5-7 7-5.  It was a particularly encouraging win for the German player who has been out since Stuttgart where she sustained an ankle injury.  Babos has shown much promise this year and I think with more experience, will be a regular in the top 30.

In other matches, Mona Barthel scored a solid win over Daniela Hantuchova, 6-3 7-5 to set up a second round match against Maria KirilenkoCaroline Wozniacki kepts the wins coming in New Haven with a routine 6-3 6-3 victory over Ekaterina Makarova and Olga Govortsova beat her doubles partner, Vera Dushevina for the second time in this tournament having defeated her in qualifying and then once again in the main draw when Dushevina was entered as a lucky loser.

In Dallas, I was pleased to see Angelique Kerber withdraw from the tournament before her first match.  The big talking point was a very impressive win for Jelena Jankovic who came from behind to beat Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-7 7-6 6-1.  The draw is completely wide open and with my winner out, my predictions are already looking depleted!

Andrea Petkovic is back!
