WTA Cincinnati: Angelique Kerber beats Serena Williams

Angelique Kerber
Angelique Kerber's 2012 season just keeps getting better and better as she inflicted the first defeat on Serena Williams since the French Open with a 6-4 6-4 triumph in Cincinnati.  Serena played a pretty horrendous match and was all over the place mentally, but I think Kerber deserves a lot of credit for putting the match to bed because Serena is the ultimate fighter and does not like to lose.  Kerber's consistency has been immense this year and I think she has so much more to her game than the likes of Wozniacki and Radwanska.  I really enjoy watching her play and the way she defends and reads the game is so impressive.  I also like how she applauds her opponents good shots... we need to see more of this in the womens game!

Kerber will take on Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals.  The two lefties have already played twice this year and this is one of my favourite match-ups on tour.  The second semi-final will be between Venus Williams and Li Na.  Venus has played remarkably well this week, in particular her 3rd round rout of Sara Errani.  Li too, now under the watchful gaze of Justine Henin's former coach, Carlos Rodriguez, looks to be hitting form at the right time as she trounced Agnieska Radwanska for the second time in a week.
