US Open: Kerber edges Venus, Roddick to retire

Andy Roddick
Thursday was a dramatic day at the US Open with the final night match proving to be the most thrilling so far as Angelique Kerber completed a hattrick of victories of Venus Williams in 2012 with a hard fought, 6-2 5-7 7-5 victory.  This was by far the closest of their matches although at one point it looked like it would be over very quickly as Kerber raced into a 6-2 2-0 lead.  Venus fought back superbly and won a flurry of games to then lead 4-2 in the final set decider before Kerber came back to win.  The German is still underestimated by many as I noticed on the Sky Sports coverage, they featured seven players who could win the title and included Venus, but not Kerber... hopefully people will start to give Kerber a bit more respect now.

After a dreadful day of predictions on Wednesday, yesterday was a very good day as I managed to successfully predict wins for Kerber, Roberta Vinci and Jack Sock too.  Thursday also saw Andy Roddick announce his retirement from the game.  It came as quite a shock, but in truth his best days are well behind him and it will be fitting that he finishes where he picked up his Grand Slam title.  Roddick will be in action tonight against Bernard Tomic and I hope he keeps winning and gets a great send-off when he does exit the competition.. he deserves it!
