Serena Williams beats Agnieszka Radwanska to claim fifth Wimbledon title

Serena Williams
Serena Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title with a hard fought, 6-1 5-7 6-2 victory over Agnieszka Radwanska.  At 6-1 4-2, it looked like it could be one of the quickest Wimbledon finals, but Radwanska staged an unlikely comeback as we saw the first three set Wimbledon womens final since 2006 when Amelie Mauresmo beat Justine Henin.  Serena evidently got tight towards the end of the second set as Radwanska started to open her shoulders.  The match was starting to bring back memories of Serena's match with Virginie Razzano at the French Open, but this time round she managed to steady herself from 2-1 down in the third set to take the final five games of the match. The turning point was a sensational game of four straight aces from Serena and she never looked back from then...

Serena played one of her poorest matches of the tournament today and even during the first set, I felt she was well below the level she reached to beat Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova.  She did not need to play that well early on, but that almost became her downfall as she got too comfortable in that second set as the plucky Radwanska started to get more balls back in court.  In the end, a superb accomplishment from Serena who has been through so much in the last two years.  You could really see how much it meant to her as she celebrated with her family.  It was a good end to what has been a pretty good womens championships and it tees things up nicely for the Olympics, which begin in three weeks time.

The attention now turns to the Mens doubles final, which involves the Brit, Jonathan Marray and the Womens doubles final where Serena returns to the court with her sister, Venus.
