WTA Montreal - Caroline beats Vera in final

Caroline Wozniacki scooped the biggest title of her career as she defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in the SF's followed by a similarly straight forward victory in the final against Vera Zvonareva, 6-2 6-3. Wozniacki was aided by her ever improving serve which was working superbly all week giving her many more free points. She was also hitting with excellent depth on her shots and increased intensity which meant she was making a lot more winners than usual. Her solid, consistent hitting was forcing both Svetlana and Vera to attack more however neither could raise their game today as they both racked up high unforced error counts. It was also nice to see Caroline come into the net more as she looked much more at ease in finishing points off at the net. Zvonareva, once again was disappointing in a final after lacklustre showings in both the Charleston and Wimbledon finals however she will go into the US feeling relatively confident of her game. Vera Zvonareva edged a tight first set with Azarenka before she retired with a blister at 7-6 1-0 down in their SF. All 4 semi-finalists in Wozniacki, Zvonareva, Kuznetsova and Azarenka should be contenders going into the US Open however it is Wozniacki who looks the most likely to succeed at the US based on this form today. It remains to be seen whether she will defend her title at New Haven, which may not be the smartest move if she wants to go into the US feeling fresh.
